Question: How to get rid of wax burn marks on upper lip?

I have got my upper lip waxed a week back. Skin got peeled off on one side and looks bad. I have been using Tzorac for more than a month before the wax, could it be because of that?

For burn marks, I'm using allure brightening lotion on my face. would that help? Can you advise on how I can get rid of the burn marks? attached is the pic of how it looks.

Brief Answer:
Post-Inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thanks for your query on healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query. I have also looked at the picture.

I could see 2 black spots on the left side area above upper lip. This is actually post -inflammatory hyperpigmentation. You developed it after waxing probably because you were already using tazarotene. Tazorac is tazarotene which is a topical retinoid and makes the skin more sensitive. Therefore using anything on your skin which is harsh e.g waxing, would carry a greater risk of causing irritation to your skin.

If I was the treating doctor I would have asked you to use a moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate (Flutivate cream), twice daily to the hyperpigmented area for 2 weeks.

Allure brightening lotion would certainly help in gradually fading it away

Thanks Dr.Kakkar for your quick response. Is this an over the counter ointment?
If not, could you please advise on any OTC medication?

Also, can i continue using tazorac?

Brief Answer:
Hydrocortisone 2.5% can also be used

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Fluticasone is a prescription product. You may use hydrocortisone 2.5% cream which would be available otc. However hydrocortisone is milder and therefore slower acting.

You may continue using tazarotene. In fact tazarotene would itself have lightening effect on the dark spots because it increases cell turnover/causes the skin to peel and therefore would help in shedding away the excess pigment. Remember not to wax or bleach as long as you are using tazarotene.

I would suggest using tazarotene at night and hydrocortisone during the day over the patch.
