How To Prevent Pregnancy After Sexual Intercourse?

default
Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: I may have had unprotected sex last night. I'm on birth control, but last week I missed a pill. I looked emergency contraception because I cannot get pregnant, and I read that if I take 4 XXXXXXX birth control pills then another 4 12 hrs later, it works like plan b. I am worried though that it is not going to work if the condom in fact does break. I already took the XXXXXXX I am wondering is this in fact an efficient EC? If not should I just go and get Plan B right now? Thanks.

Brief Answer: XXXXXXX does not work as emergency contraception. Take Plan B

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic. I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

If you have missed a pill last week then you are not protected by birth control pills and you need to take emergency contraception. XXXXXXX pill does not work as emergency contraception.

The emergency contraceptives available in USA are, Plan B, My way, Next choice and Take action.
You need to take one pill within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. The earlier after unprotected intercourse you take the pill, more effective it is.

Few names of oral contraceptives available in USA which can be used as emergency contraception are Seasonale, Trivora, Nordette, Lo/ovral ( take 4 pills within 120 hours of intercourse and take 4 more pills after 12 hours) , Lutera, Sronyx(take 5 pills within 120 hours of intercourse and take 5 more pills after 12 hours).

Are your periods regular? When was your last period? One more thing you need to know is that the first and the last week of menstrual cycle are safe. If you have unprotected intercourse during this time there is no possibility of pregnancy.

I hope I have answered your concerns.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to answer.

Thank you! I took Plan B like you suggested.

I have one last question. Last Wednesday was the day that I forgot to take my pill. This last Sunday was the last day of pills, then I started sugar pills On Monday. Monday was the day I had sex. Tuesday I (stupidly) took 8 birth control pills and today I took Plan B. I have very regular periods and normally would have started this Friday. Do you think my period will be delayed for this cycle? Will it even itself out? Thank you for all of your help.

Brief Answer:
Plan B taken in the second half of cycle, causes delay in the period.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Whenever Plan B is taken in the second half of cycle, there is usually a delay in the beginning of the next cycle. However the delay is not more than a week.

Plan B just causes temporary irregularity in period. It evens itself out. You need not worry about it. Plan B has no long term effect on periods or fertility.

I hope I have answered your concerns. If you have any further queries, do contact me through Healthcare Magic.
