How To Treat Secondary Lymphedema?
Secondary Lymphedema is difficult to treat.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Your mother is suffering from Secondary Lymphedema.
It is a very difficult disease to treat.
At our Vascular Surgery Center we offer a range of treatments.
Most patients respond to wearing Compression stocking till thigh and we also advice Tab Daflon 500mg twice a day along with limb elevation for most of the day. But recurrences are common with this treatment.
A better option is Lymphapress therapy where the patient undergoes compression therapy with use of a pump and sleeves applied to the limb which sequentially apply pressure to the limb to decrease the swelling. But for that you would have to take her for a sitting of 20 to 30 minutes every alternate day or so. Or you could buy the machine and she can use it at home.
Patients who do not respond to this and develop recurrent ulcers or infections can be offered Surgery.
Results of Surgery are less than optimum and that is why many Surgeries have been described for this disease. But I would personally advice against surgery.
You should try the above methods first.
DO let me know how I can help you further.
Take care,
