Is Cipro Effective At Treating An Urinary Infection?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Nov 2017
Question: Hello, I have had urinary infections since August. It is very clear tha Cipro is not working. A Doctor gave me Bactriban at my insistence. She wants to invade the Kidneys for a sample and one week later a camera inserted in the bladder. I know I don't drink enough water, And do have 1 or two drinks of wine at dinner. Any thoughts as how to proceed? XXXXXXX Sellon

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Urinary infections are very common in females, especially the lower ones in the form of cystitis (effecting the bladder). Using an antibiotic several times might cause that antibiotic to not be effective anymore, this might have happened with cipro in your case. Cipro is a very good antibiotic for urinary infection but resistance towards it can happen also. The Bactriban antibiotic you got is a good one also for urinary infection.

Have you had urineculture to determine the antibiotics effects and sensitivity? Have you had an ultrasound to examine the kidneys and the urinary bladder? This is a simple, easy, not expensive test that gives a lot of information on the urinary system and if not had one you need to have one done.
Women with frequent urinary complaint is recommended to have gynecological visit also. This would rule out gynae conditions that favor urinary complaints like yeast infection or uretero-cystocele.
Drinking plenty is very important to reduce risk for urinary infection.
So to conclude I would say:
1. have an ultrasound done, if you have one already please send us the results
2. have a urineculture, if you had one it would help a lot to have the results as it tells us which antibiotics are effective for you and which not.
3. having a gynecological visit is recommended if you didn't have one already.
4. make sure you drink at least 2 L of water a day, it will greatly reduce urinary infections.
5. sometimes if all those tests do not tell us enough info your doctor might ask for more invasive tests like the one you mention with a camera inserted in the bladder but this is only needed if the less invasive tests do not give us enough information.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your query but please feel free to contact us in case anymore clarifications are needed on this.

Kind regards,
