Is Metronidazole The Right Medicine For Painful Bumps On Groin Area?
Question: Two days ago I started getting painful little lump and then more in the under groin area (along the underpants leg line. There are now more and a couple in the vaginal area. Many years ago I had an abscess behind the anal opening and the pain is becoming similar but presently the pain of blind pimples and then some. Today I started taking metronidazole (from when I had a tooth abscess) so hope I am not doing anything stupid. Can't see GP until tomorrow (Monday) afternoon.
Brief Answer:
Metronidazole can be continued
Detailed Answer:
Dear madam, I understand your concern.
In my opinion metronidazole can be continued till you see the GP as it has anaerobic coverage and the area you described is infested with anaerobic organisms.
I need further information madam like:-
1. Are you a diabetic?
2. Are you a hypertensive?
3. Any fever?
4. Any redness and pus from swelling?
5. Any pain associated with swelling?
Kindly provide me the information madam, I am ready for further discussion.

Not a diabetic; not hypertensive; no fever
There is certainly redness but no pus that I can determine
There is a lot of pain

There is a lot of pain
Brief Answer:
Might be abscess
Detailed Answer:
Dear madam,
Thank you for providing necessary information.
In my opinion there might be abscess since it is associated with pain and redness. Considering your age as criteria it is advisable to rule out malignancy also.
The presence of deep seated pus can be made out with physical examination and ultrasound examination.
In case of pus your doctor might advise you for Incision & Drainage. If any pus it will be sent for culture and sensitivity. And suitable antibiotic will be given.
In case of solid mass he might advise you for biopsy
Kindly rule out diabetes also.
Till then
1.Continue metronidazole and
2.Give warm compresses.
Nothing to worry.
Hope this satisfies your query.

It is now morning here and have woken after very disturbed sleep to many, many more painful little lumps through lower groin area (all on right side), lower buttock there, along the right outer labia and possibly anal area. Urinatining is giving extreme burning. It is painful to sit & put any weight on that side. I am wondering if it might be shingles (have never had shingles). Fortunately my local medical practice opens in an hour and although my usual GP wont be in attendance there are other excellent ones. Thank you for your help so far.
Brief Answer:
Shingles is a rare possibility
Detailed Answer:
Dear madam
shingles is a rare possibility
in case of singles there will be extremely sever pain as primary symptom.
the involvement of skin also will be more like small pustules than lump.
most probably it might be a bacterial infection.
With a course of antibiotics you will recover quickly.
kindly feel free to ask any further query.

Have seen my GP and it most definitely is shingles, the little lumps are appearing as pustules and the pain is severe (with their position I couldn't see them clearly).
