Is Norethisterone Effective In Regulating Periods?
NO, YOU NEED TO HAVE COMPLETE EVALUATION
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
No it is not recommended to take Norethisterone or any other medication on your own without consulting a doctor.
Also, ovulation in the absence of regular periods is less likely.
IF you are not menstruating regularly, chances are that you are not ovulating either.
The tests might be giving you a false reading, they are not very reliable.
You need to have a complete evaluation for the cause of irregular cycles, since you are trying to conceive.
What is your height and weight ?
Did you have regular cycles before March ?
You should have the following evaluation -
1. Complete physical internal exam.
2. Pelvic ultrasound scan done transvaginally.
3. Hormones - FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, OGTT, DHEAS, Free testosterone, Lipid profile.
This workup would reveal any existing causes of irregular cycles, such as - PCOD - polycystic ovarian disease, hypothyroidism, endometrial hyperplasia etc.
Conditions such as stress, anxiety, weight changes, unaccustomed exercise, travelling, change of place, altitude or climate, smoking, drinking, late nights, erratic eating - all can affect the menstrual cycle.
Taking Norethisterone once in a while can regulate a cycle or two, in order to arrive at the root cause , an evaluation is a must.
All the best
