Is Omnacortil Forte Appropriate For Infantile Spasms?

My daughter is an extreme premature baby born in 26 weeks..she had many complications and now she is 18 months (actual date)..she is having infantile spasms and the doctor has prescribed omnacortile forte 15mg/ 5ml syrup twice a day for 2 weeks...
Is it ok to give this medicine..r there any side effects??
Its a good medicine for infantile spasms
Detailed Answer:
Hi....infantile spasms are a type of seizures. Omnacortil contains Prednisolone and its good medicine for infantile spasms.
Prednisolone is a steroid, but it is the drug of choice for this condition. As a steroid it has some side effects, but not when given at appropriate doses for appropriate period of time.
But the sideeffects are going to regress once the medicine is stopped and at the same time he has given it only for 2 weeks, which is a well known treatment for infantile spasms.
Not only steroids any medicine we take has its own side effects. Only thing is that as doctors we are trained to assess the risk benefit ratio and we tend to give any medicine only when we feel that the benefits of a particular medicine far out weigh the risks involved. I completely agree with your doctor as even I would have done the same for infantile spasms.
Any further doubts and queries are welcome.

Which do you suggest has better results? Oral syrup or 'injection??
What are the things we shld be aware of while giving this medicine?
Her spasms have reduced 70% while she was treated with sabril.. We stopped it in 6 months as it again had a serious side effect of vision loss...
The spasms have not increased or decreased since then.. Her milestones are also getting delayed..
Oral medicine is best as of now
Detailed Answer:
Hi...Coming to your queries directly -
1. Injection is for uncontrolled seizures. You have quoted that the spasms have not increased or decreased since 6 months, so your doctor would have preferred oral than injectible drug.
2. While giving a steroid - no immediate effects will occur. But on the long run the child might gain weight and sometimes the immune power might come down, but it is rare when used for 2 weeks. I think you doctor will start tapering the dose and gradually stop it when you go to him for 2 weeks review.
3. Delaying of milestones is quite common in such scenario with infantile spasms. The final developmental stage the kid achieves can only be answered by time. Physiotherapy is important in achieving the developmental milestones.
I wish your kid a speedy recovery and bright future. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link. Please find the link below.
