Is PSA Level Of 6.7 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Thu, 1 Jun 2017
Question: I received a report from my urologist this morning. He informed me that I have a 6.7 PSA and that the free PSA results were 55% which is 8% of the men age 80 or 1% of the population. He recommended that I do nothing at this time except frequent PSA testing.
In order to monitor the progression, how fast the cancer is growing.

I would be interested in knowing what the PSA levels are for mail age 80?. How elevated is 6.7%?. My doctor talked about the 4K score, but I guess I wasn't listening clearly, my mind was fixated on the 6.7 PSA results.

I would appreciate receiving directions to studies and reports on prostate cancer.

Thank you,

Brief Answer:
You have to monitor PSA levels at every two months interval.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.

Based on the fact that you have posted your recent PSA has been revealed to 6.7 ng
PSA values are not age related and is considered to be primary screening factor to diagnose cancer of prostate .

Normal PSA value is 1-4 ng. There is international protocol that any value above this normal value should be considered to be due to Cancer of Prostate unless proved otherwise by doing Ultrasound or MRI guided Prostate Biopsy.

However, since PSA can even be raised in infection of Prostate it is a standard protocol to do monitor PSA levels at frequent interval of two months and take a call for biopsy only when there is persistent high level of PSA or there is raising trend in PSA levels .

Your Urologist has rightly suggested you, just wait and observe the monitor PSA levels.

Hope I have answered your query, please feel free to ask if you have more questions, I shall be happy to help you.

Thanks and Regards.
