Is A Gas Bubble Required After Removal Of Silicon Gel After?
Question: my wife has undergone retinal detachment surgery 4 months back,it is done using Vitrectomy method using silicon gel, and now when it is time to remove the gel, doctor is suggesting to put the gas bubble after removing the silicon gel. I need a suggestion whether to go for this? why is it required?

My dear patient thank you so much for asking question on this forum.See the concept is very easy our eye is seperated from outside atmosphere by eye ball wall.If pressure outside eye(atmosphere) is more then pressure inside eye then eye would collapse.Therefore after removal of silicon gel gas bubble would be introduced in eye cavity( to balance cavity pressure with outside pressure),otherwise the eye would collapse permanently.
So you should follow the procedure suggested by your opthalmologist dear.

Thank you very much doctor for your precious suggestion, i have one more query for you,due to silicon gel she is also affected by cataract which is in early stages. my doubt is if we introduce this gas bubble will it not get worse?

Vitrectomy increases oxygen levels in the eye, which is thought to cause damage to the proteins in the lens by processs of oxidation and causes cataract.
its very common side effect of vitrectomy and will be treated by implanting artificial lens.
Whether its silicon or air oxidative stress would be same.

sure doctor, so one last question, so when she can go for the cataract surgery after this vitrectomy treatment ? and if any case operation fails what are our next steps? and can i know how easy is the eye replacement procedure and cost?

I am sorry but eye can't be replaced or transplanted.Only a part of eye called cornea can be replaced thats it.
cataract surgery can be performed 8-12weeks after bubble introduction in eye.
