Is Blood Glucose Level Of 48 Mg/dl A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I was feeling really faint and having a hard time making decisions, and tested my blood sugar and it was 48. As with low blood pressure, is the only risk with low blood sugar passing out, or can you cause organ damage or other problems if you go below a certain blood sugar threshold?

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are due to low glucose, cause needs to be found out for tt.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
A blood glucose level of 48 mg/dl is a very low value and it is called hypoglycemia.
Hypoglycemia can cause various symptoms like sweating, nervousness, fainting, lack of concentration, blurring of vision, tachycardia or rapid heart beat, tiredness etc.
Fainting attacks and difficulty in making decisions that you have mentioned are due to low blood glucose.
However, the cause of hypoglycemia needs to be known to avoid it.
Usually diabetics on oral hypoglycemics experience hypoglycemia if they skin meals or take excessive dose of drug.
Extreme physical activity, starving or fasting can lead to hypoglycemia.
Besides there are certain tumors of pancreases which can cause hypoglycemia.
