Is Blood Pressure Of 130/84 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Aug 2017
Question: Hi, my 70 year old husband has been on blood pressure med for many years. His doctor increased his med of Amlodipine Besylate from 5 mg. to 10 mg. Once his doctor told him to increase, he accidentally started taking 20mg. for about a week and a half. His feet and lower legs started to swelled up considerably; his right leg is worse. It is red and shiny. Once he realized his error, he cut back to 10 mg. about 5 days ago for several days, and then the last two days he has cut it back further to 5 mg. The swelling is still not any better. He just now took his blood pressure (after ripping up boxes for the trash and a couple cups of coffee, so not sure how accurate it is) and it is 130/84. Please advise, Thanks!

Brief Answer:
The value 130/84 is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

The blood pressure reading of your husband is rather normal.
Now there are 2 things to keep in mind:
- First, It needs some days for the blood pressure to get stabilized after the change of the medicines.
- Secondly, Amlodipine gives swollen legs as a side effect. He didn't get that side effect because of the high dose, but maybe because of the sudden big increase.

So these are my recommendations:
- Continue to measure blood pressure regularly in the following days so you will have the records when you go next time to your doctor.
- Continue for some more days taking the amlodipine 5mg. The swelling should go down. If it doesn't until 5 more days, then see your doctor again, so he can examine him, and maybe consider changing Almodipine with another medicine which doesn't give that side effect.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.
