Is Blood Pressure Value Of 180/110 A Cause For Concern?
Question: Hi, my 18 year old son has blood pressure of 180/110 today. He had a grand mal seizure this summer (1 month ago) and and abnormal EEG, but a normal MRI. He says he feels a discomfort around his heart and also near his right underarm/chest area. He is taking Lamectal gradually and is now at 125 mg. per day as an anti seizure med. He had high blood pressure at his physical about 2 months ago, but did not tell me until today. He has a pediatrician and a neurologist, but does not have a primary care/internal med. doctor for adults. Any suggestions/ next steps? He leaves for college on Monday.

I have noted your son's medical details. His BP is high and he needs to be evaluated to determine the cause of hypertension (high BP). This would require blood tests and ultrasound of kidneys/renal doppler.
Also, in addition to anti-seizure medication, he should also be started on anti-hypertensive medication such as telmisartan or olmesartan.
