Is Blood Sugar Level Of 201 A Cause For Concern?

Question: Just checked my blood sugar at 2:00am est, it is at 201. I am on 1000mg of Metformin. I have been a little dizzy and very dried out the last 3 days or so. What should I do?

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

Dizziness, feeling of dried out may be due to dehydration which may be due to uncontrolled blood sugar level.
Which also reflected through reading of 201 at 2am.

In such case I may suggest following investigations-
- Blood sugar level by using venous blood (Fasting & Postprandial).
- HbA1c.
- Renal Function Test - urea, creatinine, electrolytes.
- Liver function Test.
- Urine examination including for urine ketones.
- Complete blood count.
- ECG
- Chest xray.

Depending upon detailed history taking, clinical examination and above test results one can confirm hyperglycemia and can get fair idea regarding any aggravating factors for uncontrolled blood sugar level.
Depending upon above there may be a need of insulin treatment for faster control of blood sugar levels.
Along with this changes or addition of oral antidiabetic medicines in your current medicine metformin can be considered.

You should consult your treating doctor for detailed history taking and clinical examination.
