Is Burning Sensation In The Stomach Normal Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Oct 2016
Question: I had a gastric sleeve surgery 4 years ago. Weight during surgery 100 kg. weight lost 20 kg. Current weight 88 kg. I didn't get a perfect result I'm gaining weight again. I'm considering to do it again. recently I had injections of iron because of iron insufficiency and low hemoglobin level. I always have acid reflux. My question is why my stomach is not absorbing iron anymore, eventually is going low every time even if I'm eating and gaining weight, second is the stomach burn is normal to feel them all the time after sleeve, I'm not happy of taking nexum all the time as it can affect kidneys. so what you advice. In the other side I'm considering to do the surgery again. do you advice at that stage or it doesn't matter because damage already done!

Brief Answer:
As discussed in details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
I have read your history and understood your concerns.
To recapitulate: Female/31 - Gastric sleeve 4 years ago - 100 kg > 80 kg - current is 88 kg - not happy considering re-doing it - Iron insufficiency and low Hb - acid reflux and stomach burn - and taking Nexium - not happy taking Nexium all the time as it affects kidneys - wants advise...

Please give few more details:
What is your height / BMI ?
Any associated medical problems like diabetes, hypertension, snoring/ obstructive sleep apnea, anything related to your weight?
How much is the hemoglobin and Anemia typing/profile report please.

Nexium or anything that reduces the acidity affect the iron absorption from duodenum and the proximal jejunum in a negative way. Iron absorption pathways are still ill-understood.
Also needed is proper Folic acid, Vitamin A and D and trace elements in normal range to have absorption of iron and all the nutrients. Please get these checked and corrected if deficient as it will help positively.
I would advise you the following also:
Proper evaluation of the gastric pouch and acidity related issues at the moment by means of Upper GI Endoscopy and barium studies to decide the further course of actions.
Proper diet and exercises can be seriously considered as a primary trial to get a reduced weight and to consider the surgery only after the medical management fails.

I hope this answer helps you.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
