Is Complete Sedation Done For A Colonoscopy?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Dec 2014
Question: I have had some consistent (but mild) stomach pain. Seems to be mostly in my intestines. I have also been seeing a urologist because I have been urinating too much. So far no infections, my psa is normal, negative for diabetes, but I am wondering if they are related? I am told I will likely get a referall to a GI doc, and might be asked to do a colonoscopy. My question is, do they completely sedate you now for that? I don't want to feel/know anything that's going on. Do my symptoms sound like anything specific to you?

Brief Answer:
conscious sedation is used by most people

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Most centers practice conscious sedation for colonoscopy, which means mild.sedation With analgesics and the patient is conscious during the procedure. It can be done by completely sedating the person too .I would advise you to discuss regarding this with your gastroenterologist who would help you regarding what he practices at his center. You symptoms do not point to a specific disease. We need to look for colonic ulcers

Is there another way to look for colonic ulcers other than colonoscopy? My brother said he had an IV and it knocked him completely out...That doesn't sound like mild sedation does it?

What is the treatment for colonic ulcers?

Brief Answer:
sedation protocol varies from center to center

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The amount of sedation given varies from center to center and is often tailored as per the needs of the person undergoing the test.
In my center the practice is to administer conscious sedation to start with and increase the level of sedation if required . Some patients.request deep sedation in which case we do that ( what happened to your brother). Some people refuse any form of sedation during the procedure.
Hence it is important to discuss this with the doctor performing this procedure.
The treamnt of colonic ulcers depend on the cause which is determined by biopsy. But is almost always with medications and not surgery.
Hope this helps
