Is Degenerated Leiomyoma Associated With Increased Epithelial Antigen?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: I had a leiomyoma with degenerative changes and tested positive for epithelial membrane antigen. What does this mean? Can it be linked to breast or uterine cancers? I have a small lump on my left breast very close to the skin and some small bumps on the side of the nipple. Could this be another tumor? Should I get it looked at?

Brief Answer:
Get further investigations done

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Degenerating leiyomyoma should not be associated with increased epithelial antigen.
Increased epithelial antigen is found to be associated with adenomyosis and endometriosis which are found frequently with fibroids.
Lumps in breast and increased epithelial antigen needs the breast, uterine and ovarian cancer to be ruled out by proper investigations like biopsy, MRI and ultrasound.
You should get these investigations as soon as possible and get treated accordingly.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

So, the presence of epithelial antigen is sign of concern? What does "degenerative changes" mean? Because of the presence of the antigen more tests should be done?

Degenerative changes in the fibroid means that the blood supply to the fibroid was beginning to hamper leading to the degeneration in the fibroid tissue.
Yes, investigations like breast lump examination and biopsy, MRI and if required, endometrial biospsy should be done.

So, if your patient got a patholofy report back from a hand tumor w rare epithelial cells of this nature, you would refer them to get further tests, such as the ones your describing, to detect where/why the source?
