I read your question and i undrstand your concern. EVLT also called Endovascular Laser Therapy is the safest and least invasive approach to discomforting varicose veins. Their efficacy however is as good as surgery and same recurrence possibilities rather higher compared to surgery.
But considering your age of 58 and era of minimal invasive techniques i would say EVLT is the one favourable for you.
Yes the procedure is safe unless you have some of the contraindications which your doctor will for sure rule out before performing it. DVT and hypercoagulable states or deranged liver functions are commonest contraindications.
