Is Flying Safe During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: My wife is 10.5 weeks pregnant. This is her first pregnancy without any history of miscarriage. In the beginning when she was 5 weeks+, she was taking microgest as suggested by the doctor, but later we changed the doctor as the first doctor flew overseas. The second doctor said she doesnt need to take microgest anymore, only folic acid. On 30 Oct, in the morning she had a bit of bleeding with around 1.5 inch clot, but after that bleeding subsided. We did ultra-sound, and found baby's hear beat is still there, other reports also came normal. Later during the day some brown spotting occurred when she wiped with tissue paper. The doctor said not to worry and to take complete bed rest.

We have another Gynaecologist in the family who is suggesting microgest 3 times a day in addition to resting. So is it Ok to take? Plus is there any risk of miscarriage?
Has the process of m/c already started?

We found she was pregnant when we were in XXXXXXX for vacation, and she did not come back to Australia as this is her trimester. Will it be safe for her to fly a 13 hours flight to Aus after 13 weeks of pregnancy?

Brief Answer:
She can take the medicine. Repeat scan after 2 wk.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Mild bleeding or spotting is quite common in early weeks of pregnancy or first trimester. As her last ultrasound report on 30th October was NORMAL with fetal heart beat, then you shouldn't be worried much. Do periodic check up.

2) She needs complete bed rest, AVOIDS heavy work, long journey, too much bending, uneven surface and more up/down. Maintain genital hygiene properly.

3) Microgest is natural micronised progesterone supplement and it is quite SAFE. It helps to support pregnancy and make healthy along with PREVENTS possible miscarriage to some extent. Follow doctor's advice and repeat scan after 2 weeks.

4) Flight journey is quite safe up to 32 weeks in uncomplicated pregnancy. She needs doctor's permission and complete assessment to exclude associated risks before flight journey.

In my opinion, she can make travel through flight after 13 weeks if her overall checkup, fetal well being and test report are normal in follow-up visit.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish her good health and take care yourself.

Dr S Patra
