Brief Answer:
Tinnitus (ringing) can be a symptom in different types of headaches

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. Thank you for your question. Ringing in the ears called TINNITUS is a potential symptom in MIGRAINE types of headaches. It is also noted in headaches categorized as MIGRAINOUS VERTIGO which are complex in nature composed of migraines and vertigo (spinning sensations). Tinnitus can also be part of headaches which occur as a result of increased intracranial pressure. Tinnitus can also be a side effect of overuse of medications such as aspirin which if used excessively can also be a cause of MEDICATION OVERUSE HEADACHES. In this case, the tinnitus and the headache are really based upon 2 separate problems that are related but independent of one another.

In Meniere's disease there is a significant amount of tinnitus, vertigo, hearing loss, nausea/vomiting, and rather severe headaches. This is one of the more aggressive types of headaches where tinnitus is found.

In short, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and headaches can be found in each other's company. The best way to determine this relationship is to keep a diary or headache log which outlines different parameters of a headache including the appearance and disappearance of tinnitus which will define whether or not the symptom can be considered an AURA, an EFFECT of the headache, or even a CAUSE to the headache.
