Posted on Tue, 2 Dec 2014
Question: hi. I take green coffee supplement for blood sugar management and have also tried gymnemma, an ayurvedic herb used for with sugar cravings as well as blood sugar management. I don't know which is best, but I'm wondering if you have any knowledge of potential harmful side effects from the use of either one? And do you suggest any other options?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
You can only use them as supplements not for Rx.

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend... very good morning .. have read your quiery. Gymnema sylvestre used in south Asia from long before for obesity and diabetes...contain flavones, resins, stigmosterols (plant sterol), gymnemic acids (glycosides) green coffee has antioxidants... YES these supplements active principles which will decrease the absorption of glucose and even cholesterol from our gut!! and even help to better the metabolic derangement in obese and diabetics...recent studies also have proven that these herbs will assist diabetic patients . even beet root juice (inorganic nitrate), olive leaves, termeric, tamarind ... all have definite benefits for patients with diabetes and metabolic syndrome. But the problem is these supplements alone can never be used for the management of diabetes!!!

Please check your fasting glucose levels, HbA1c, and lipid profile ... if the values are with in limits u can definitely continue with these lifestyle management. But, if they are too high we need to add some other medications. Stay away from all the fast / processed / and fried food stuffs .. divide your meal in to 4-5 parts per day when ever you feel hungry.. add more of fiber rich food stuffs like green leafy vegetables, raw fruits.. (not juices), eat very less of carbohydrates, avoid sugar completely. Do take more of proteins ... like egg white... say no to oils and cholesterol rich food stuffs ... u can take fish (boiled) but chicken (without skin) rarely...sir, based on this you prepare your diet chart and strictly follow it ..Do exercise .. walk at least half an hour to one hour a day ... alcohol intake.. if u can follow these (have to!!) you can definitely see difference yourself.
PLEASE GET BACK TO ME WITH BLOOD REPORTS... THANK YOU HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!
