Is It Safe To Have Small Doses Of Narcotics For Long Periods?
Question: My mother is taking one or two hydrocon 10/325 for pain a day, as well as little bites of 2mg bar Xanax daily. Her doctor has her on Cumadin to prevent a stroke after having chemo therapy for lung cancer last year. As well as two lung lobes removed. I think she should eat healthy food and get off the Cumadin, but I also think mixing the pain meds and xanax for the last ten years has probably effected her quality of life. She never takes more than prescribed so she thinks it's just fine, but I tell her taking narcotics even in small doses makes your body addicted to them over time and can begin to have a reverse affects, even making her sick. What do you think?

You are right in stating that narcotic drugs are dependence forming. But at the same times, it cannot be denied that narcotic painkillers are the most effective painkillers. It can be said that pain is the most important concern among the lung cancer patients as it impairs their quality of life a lot. So basically what is required is a good balance between required usage of narcotics and preventing un-necessary usage. She should be inofirmed about the addiction potential of the narcotic painkillers and to take them only to reduce the pain in the dose as less required as possible. but at the same time, she should not suffer from just for the sake that narcotics are addiction forming.
Xanax in the dose of 2mg may also be required PRN as required and may be she can try taking half of xanax of 2mg occasionally. If this suits her, she can continue with half of xanax as well.

So can the mixtures of the drugs I mentioned, Cumedin ,Ambien,Wellbutrin,Xanax, and hydro codons-10's cause problems. I believe we need to get on a heathy green ,fiber and protein filled diet immediately, but mostly salads and greens. I believe a healthy diet will keep her blood level at good levels and than she will be Able to taper off the Cumedin. Of course start to take in green salads rather Bologna sanwhichs covered in Mayo. Get her food right then start removing the cumiden as her blood levels stabilize
