Posted on Wed, 7 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I have seen the doctor about dermatitis on my face and have been prescribed doxycycline, mometasone 0.1% (1mg/g) cream and Bactroban.
My treament plan is to use each one for one week. I have finished my course of doxycycline and I am not sure which ointment to use first, the mometasone or the Bactroban.
Can you please help?

Brief Answer:
I will require a picture;most likely it is an itchy, infected skin condition

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

I have gone through your query. I will be able to guide you better if you can upload a picture of the affected area.

After going through the prescription (Oral+topical antibiotic and a topical steroid), I think it is most likely an infected, itchy skin condition. The reason for starting on you on doxycycline is that probably it is infected.
-How has it changed over the week? while you were on doxycycline.
-Is it itchy and is it weepy/ oozing?
-Can you upload a picture of the affected area?It will be really easy for me to guide you better after having a look at the present skin condition.

The itch has gone away and its not weepy or oozing and is a bit dry in some areas. some of the bumps have gone down but not clear.

Brief Answer:
Looks like facial seborrheic dermatitis with bacterial folliculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thank you for additional information. I have reviewed the photograph.
This looks like "facial seborrheic dermatitis along with bacterial folliculitis" to me.
Facial seborrheic dermatitis classically presents with erythema and itchy, scaly patches at sides of the nose and sometimes on the eyebrows, chin and moustache area as well.
I suggest you to continue with doxycycline for another week.
Topically you may use bactroban for a week to let the bumps subside, thereafter you may use mometasone for a week.

-Does it involve both sides of the face?
-Were the bumps painful and did they discharge pus?

Only on one side of my face. Before treatment it was only red and itchy with bumps and since starting on the doxycyline the bumps began to produce many small pimple like heads which have since gone away. I wouldn't say they were pus but lije I said very small but numerous pimples. there is some slight pain but only very very minor.

Will the bactroban dry out my skin? if so can I use some kind of moisturising lotion or paw paw ointment to help with the dryness?
Thank you so much for your help :-). very much appreciated.

Brief Answer:
Use bactroban only twice daily.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

No. Bactroban wont dry out your skin further. It would rather help somewhat. Use it twice daily for a week. Also extend Oral Doxycyline for a week.
The dryness is actually part of seborrheic dermatitis. That should respond very well to mometasone furoate 0.1% which you may start after a week once the bumps have resolved on Oral + topical antibiotic.
