Is Knee Replacement Surgery Advisable For An Elderly Person?

default
Posted on Sat, 18 Feb 2017
Question: My sister has convinced my 87 year old mother that she needs knee replacement surgery. My mother has led a fairly active life (swimming, bowling, golf, etc.)until recently. She is able to walk still but up and down stairs is painful for her. I thought it was irresponsible to push for a knee replacement at age 87. The recovery time, the physical therapy and the dangers of general anesthesia have not been discussed with her, she seems to think there is little downside and only positive benefits. my sister refuses to consider getting a second opinion. Is this surgery a good idea at 87 and are there any other possible remedies? R.P. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

We usually advise knee replacement surr to our patients who have arthritis and are in deep pain even during walking or sitting.

After knee surgery your mother will lead a healthy and prosperous life, but only thing to take care is after surgery 15 days are important which are know as post operative days, some cure is needed at that time like healthy diet, assisted walking, following doctor's advise strictly, also that patient should mentally feels healthy.

Apart from surgery your mother should do-

Knee muscle strengthening exercises.

Physiotherapy.

Avoid squatting and upstairs.

Use knee brace.

If patient is unwilling to get surgery then I advise intra articular steroid injection, intra articular hyaluronidase injection.

At last I would advise you to get knee replacement surgery done as she is physically active and you both sisters can take care of her.

I hope you have got your answer.

Thanks,

Dr.CHANDER XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
