At present researchers are trying to determine whether it is an autoimmune disease but it is not at this time.
It is linked to autoimmune diseases. Celiac disease and thyroid disease, both autoimmune conditions, increase the risk of developing this condition.

Microscopic colitis refers to collagenous and lymphocytic colitis. There are other risk factors (factors that increase the risk of developing this condition)- increasing age, female sex, history of organ transplant, past or current malignancy.
