Posted on Mon, 4 May 2015
Question: My son had surgery for scfe about 2 weeks ago on his left leg. He had the pin put in it, he has had his 1st doctor follow up visit and he said his leg looks good and he should start bearing weight on it. He is walking much better on the crutches and when he walks without the crutches he has a limp. The doctor didn't say anything about physical therapy but should he be doing physical therapy on that leg

Brief Answer:
Physical therapy will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
After the surgery for SCFE, the use of crutches may be needed till the bone has healed. It may take upto 6 weeks for the complete healing. The mild limp after stopping using the crutches is a routine finding. This will improve gradually as the bone heals. Physiotherapy will help in improving the limp. To ensure your child does not slip, make sure your child is wearing good rubber-soled shoes.
I hope this answers your query.
