Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Plan B After Unprotected Sex?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Oct 2014
Question: Hello. I took Plan B less than 48 hours after having unprotected sex, but my partner did not ejaculate inside of me. I'm very paranoid about being pregnant because I'm only 20 years old. I had my period a little earlier than I expected, but had no symptoms. My period was normal at first then became very light. I had period symptoms after though. My face is breaking out, I'm bloated, and my nipples are tender. Is this normal?

Brief Answer:
no chance of pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

Please do not worry. You have taken Plan B and have had a period so there is no chance of pregnancy. Your partner did not ejaculate inside so it itself brings the chances to miniscule. Also all the other symptoms like acne, breast tenderness and bloating are due to the pill. These are routine symptoms and go away after some time.

Your next period may be delayed as this was a premature period. So do not worry about it.

If you are still uncomfortable take a pregnancy test 3 weeks after the sexual episode to rule out pregnancy.

The chance of pregnancy in your case is not there as you had a period after that and ejaculation was outside. So please do not worry at all.

Hope this satisfies your query.

Okay thank you for the detailed response. I do have one more question. I know that the Plan B pill is a very strong dosage of hormones. I just wanted to know if there was a chance of my hormones becoming unbalanced? If so, should I go to the doctor right away so that they could give me advice on how to balance them? I just don't want the acne to continue. It's never been this bad. I was reading that the acne could last for a while.

Brief Answer:
most of the time it clears by itself

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I understand the issue. Plan B does have a high dose of hormones but there is no need to see a doctor to balance the hormones back. The effect wears off by itself in a few weeks and normal rhythm is restored.

About the acne, it is not very common to get a breakout with plan B. However if it occurs, it tends to clear by itself. Try to eat lot of fruits, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Also, avoid sun exposure and you may use isotretinoin ointment if it is severe.

If it continues beyond 2-3 weeks then you may need to consult a dermatologist and see if there is an infection and may need some oral medicines too.

With this you should be fine.

I am here for any more queries.

Take care.
