Is Steroid Shot Safe To Have For Pain In Left Thigh And Hip?
He had a brain hemorhage and a stroke in 2009. He now says he has some pain in his left thigh just
at the edge of his hip. He has been advised by his doctor to get a steroid shot for the pain. The pain
is not really bad, but he is 85 and thinks he should get this shot. I am worried about the side effects of this shot. His health is great otherwise. I don't want him to get the shot. It can be helped by alleve. Do you recommend this shot and will it also have to be done over and over if he gets it. I am afraid it will
make some other big problems if he takes it. Do you recommend
he gets it?.
Can take the shot...
Detailed Answer:
Hi there my dear,
I have gone through the medical history of your husband and understood your concerns.
You are saying that he had 2 stents and brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2009. Is he also on medications for the moment? Please specify.
If he is already taking the medications, he can take the shot to reduce the pain. Alleve alone cannot help him at this time. That's why he needs the shot. The side effect of shot is to increase blood pressure.
I usually advise my patients to monitor blood pressure prior the shot, and after taking the shot. Thus, immediate spikes in blood pressure would be prevented.
Usually, the use of steroid shots is short-term and won't cause side effects apart oscillations of BP. If he gets his pills regularly, he won't have oscillations in BP too.
Hope it helped! Let me know if you have further questions!
