Is Surgical Abortion Procedure Life Threatening?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Mar 2015
Question: On 3rd of january I had a abortion as my sac was not growing at 5weeks . I was prescribed mifepristone and 4 misoprostol tabs. On the very second week I was again told to continue misoprostol orally for a week and another week my usg showed that I have minimal poc retains. I was told by my gynecologist to use 3 misoprostol but again the usg showed minimal retains with endometrium thickness of 15.1 . My gynacologist informed me that I have to go through a D&C but risky in my case following my past history of adherent placenta delivering a preterm baby at that time and placenta retained. I want to know how risky it is and why am I asked to do a biopsy. Is it life threatening ???

Brief Answer:
It is surgical abortion, not life threatening.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Inspite of multiple doses of Misoprostol, the pregnancy is not getting completely aborted, and the uterus is not completely empty.
So a D and C ( surgical abortion ) is prescribed for you.
It is not a biopsy, it is surgical abortion which is done when medical tablets for abortion fail.
It is not life threatening, it is just completing the process of abortion.
Do not worry.
An expert gynecologist will do it carefully and correctly.
Yes, with previous history of retained placenta, it can be slightly more risky than other cases.
Chances of perforation of uterus are higher.
However if it is done under proper anesthesia with ultrasound guidance, it is not life threatening.
All the best
