Is Surgical Treatment Needed For Diverticulitis?
Question: Hi there,
I am a 43 healthy women. I had a diverticulitis attack in May, had a colonoscopy ( my 3rd one) where they found Multiple diverticulitis in sigmoid and descending colon. I am scheduled for surgery but the surgeon ( 3rd one I've been too) scared me so bad I am very on the fence of this surgery. Is there any other means then this? I've never been cut up before and I eat very healthy. I just have constipation problems, but since I have so many of these holes I'm scared my bowels are going to link and I don't want that. I am very stressed about it and I don't know if I am making the right choice. The BEST surgeon even said since I have IBS this "big 4 hr surgery, 4-7 days in the hospital w/ 8 weeks recovery time. (?) might not even help me.

Brief Answer:
Diverticulitis requires partial colectomy after repeat infections
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
You have been diagnosed with diverticulosis and diverticulitis. The cause of this is constipation and not diet. The only true way to heal from this is to remove the disease portion of your colon. If you do not then you run the risk of rupturing one of the diverticula and causing peritonitis. This could be life threatening.
I think you are making the right choice to have the partial colectomy.
