Suggest Duration Of Cure For Peritonitis Infections

My husband is 61 and always healthy but he's been fighting peritonitis and complications (enlarged small & large intestines, etc) since Dec. 2010 - in the hosp. twice and now has a Pic Line and can't eat! All b/c of a burst appendix that they still haven't operated on - they say possibly May. How long can this last? He's been in hosp 24 day and lost 20 lbs!! Home now w/ nurse visits 2 X week. How long?

Hello,

Rupture appendix may cause peritonitis. If you are diagnosed with peritonitis you will need treatment in hospital to get rid of the infection. This might take 10 to 14 days.

Treatment usually involves being given antibiotics into a vein (intravenously). It is hard to digest food in peritonitis so need feeding through nasogastric tube. If part of the stomach lining has been seriously damaged by infection, you may need surgery to remove it.

Sometimes pus-filled swellings (abscesses) develop in the lining and need to be drained with a needle under local anesthetic. You might also need an operation to deal with the cause of the peritonitis. For example, a burst appendix will need to be removed.

I think for your husband the infection may be not cleared so that's why your doctor not done surgery. Please consult your treating doctor, he will examine and treat him accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
