Is Swelling On Right-sided Neck When Turning Head A Symptom Of Lymphoma?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: Hello, I have had some swelling on the right side of my neck near the base of my neck. It was sporadic over the last few weeks but is now more persistent. I had blood work done which came back normal, and have an ultrasound scheduled for later this week. It feels like the swelling could be from a swollen lymph node, and when I tilt my head to the left I can feel a slightly XXXXXXX bump in the area. It is also a little red/tender to the touch. I'm concerned about lymphoma.

Brief Answer:
As detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/21 - swelling right side of neck - near base of neck - prominent on turning head to left - slightly XXXXXXX -little red and tender - last few weeks - concerned about lymphoma ...

Why think of the most serious condition.
We always consider the commonest causes first.
As per the history of redness and tenderness befits into infection, hence can be an inflamed lymph node or can have an infected sebaceous cyst.
Lymphoma nodes are shotty and not red and not tender.
Yet, the best option is:
- Clinical evaluation and examination by a Doctor, preferably a general or ENT Surgeon, which I hope has been done as you have mentioned above- visited a Doctor.
- Ultrasound give better diagnosis.
- FNAC, that is fine needle aspiration cytology gives correct diagnosis in almost all the cases.
- The remaining few % needs excision of the lump for 2 reasons
1. One gets rid of the tumor which is not the normal part of the body.
2. One get a confirmed diagnosis by histopathology of the lump that is removed.

I hope this answer helps you to get the correct diagnosis and proper treatment, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
