Is Taking 400mg Of Lamictal Harmful?
I am prescribed 200mg of lamotrogine, and right now, that's all I'm on. Last night, I took my 200mg as prescribed, but then I started to question whether I had actually taken the medication before and just not remembered. I don't think that I did, but I really can't remember, so worst case scenario is that i took 400mg by accident. I know this isn't considered a toxic level, and I called poison control and they said it was okay, but I'm still panicking. There's no way that I'll be able to get ahold of my psychiatrist today because he's just really not easily accessible, and I also don't know what to do because I have no idea if I actually took it twice. I feel a bit dizzy and unbalanced but I can't tell if it's actually me experiencing these side effects or just my mind convincing me that I am because I'm so worried. My question is, should I be concerned if I DID take the 400mg? If I did am I supposed to skip today's dose of lamotrogine? Or continue to take it as normal? And if I did take it, will these side effects continue?
Not to worry about toxicity or anything with 400 mg
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.
First of all you need not worry about 400 mg lamictal.
You are right in saying that it is not toxic dose and 400 mg considered completely safe. I like to point out that in few other conditions lamictal is used as 500 mg per day for maintenance treatment which may continue for years or decades.
Rather than worrying about anything just keep continuing your treatment as prescribed without skipping today dose.
Although you may feel giddiness and unbalanced but they are rare at this dose. Even if they occur they are likely to last for hours or days and mostly for one to two days.
You also need to maintain proper hydration during this time as well as in future to avoid giddiness and imbalance. Try to take at least two to three liters of water per day.
Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
