Question: My daughter is now 11. She was severely pegion toed at birth. Now 5% on the right and about 14% on left. Just finished PT for the 3rd time. No help. Hurts to straighten left foot. No hip problems. What do we do next? Primary care doctor said podiatry but now changed her mind to orthopedic doctor. What's your opinion? We have appointment with podiatry tomorrow not sure I should keep the appt now though.

Brief Answer:
I'd recommend orthopedic surgeon who specializes in pediatric orthopedics.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms. XXXX,

Both podiatrists and orthopedic surgeons can treat intoeing. That may be why your primary care doc suggested first one and then the other.

Podiatrists can do surgery, and are also skilled with using special shoe orthotics.

Orthopedic surgeons have more training in surgery, and as your daughter's intoeing may be a problem that could involve the other bones of the legs too, I would pursue seeing an orthopedic surgeon.

You will need to do a little research to find an orthopedic surgeon who is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, and who has extensive experience treating intoeing.

I think that is the most important factor here - experience with treating this particular problem.

You can start by asking your primary care doctor for someone she has worked with that she believes has a lot of experience with this in particular. Otherwise, you can call an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in pediatric's office and ask if you can talk with his/her nurse. Then ask about experience with treating this problem. The receptionist might be able to tell you too. Ask, also, how many years the doctor has been in practice.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
Note: For further queries, consult a joint and bone specialist, an Orthopaedic surgeon. Book a Call now.
