Is Unusual Redness On Face A Symptom Of Lupus?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Dec 2015
Question: Hi,
My sister has sent me the following question about my 8 year old niece:
"XXXX just suddenly capsized middle of 1 afternoon, very tired out, and with this redness on her face, obviously not feeling well, but mainly went off to sleep. she had the redness - sometimes more than this, sometimes less, for several days... and has also had some milder degree of that on several other occasions, but not as strongly apparent as here. As it has cropped up again in recent couple of months (very mild version), I am just wondering about it. Its very specific, across her cheeks and bridge of nose - but not sunburn, nowhere else, and not after sun exposure.."
I can't get the photo to attach but her description is very accurate. I am concerned (the images remind me of the rash associated with lupus) and I think she should take XXXXXXX to see her doctor. Any suggestions, please? (Please note: I know she should take XXXXXXX to see her Doctor - my concern is that Lupus is often not diagnosed (and may be uncommon in children). It would therefore be helpful to know how specific the rash is and how much concern is warranted. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Get blood tests done. Take her to see a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Health care magic.

The moment I saw the image (before I had even gone through the question), the first impression that I had was of SLE - systemic lupus erytematosus. You should definitely ask her mother to take her to a doctor but before that, get the following blood tests done:
* Blood for C-reactive protein (CRP)
* Blood Anti nuclear antibody (ANA)
* Blood for Anti-Smith Antibody

These would expedite the process of diagnosis.
