What Causes Frequent Coughing Of Phlegm After Spinal Surgery Through Throat?
I had spinal surgery 7 days ago, the doctor went in by the front in my throat to get to spine. The surgery has been very successful, no fever, no pain. The only problem I have is every three hours or so I cough up green phlegm. Is this caused by the anesthesia? Should I take something for it?
If the expectoration is produced locally it will be seen on examination of throat and treated as per the findings. If the expectoration is coming from lungs or bronchial tree then I would advise you to send the mucus for gram staining, culture and sensitivity. Green color usually indicates bacterial infection. This will give the best possible choice for correct antibiotic and till then you can be started on prescription based antibiotic. Also, get blood tests and X-ray of the chest is highly advisable.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
