MRI Showed Fluid Collection That Is Hypointense. What Should Be Done Next?
Question: On a recent MRI of a 78 year old male it was noted that there was a fluid collection that is hypointense on T1 and flair sequence and hypertintense on T2 sequence, this measures approximately 7mm in maximum diameter cn you explain thank you

First of all, I would like to reassure you that the MRI findings do not represent any serious brain disease.
The common causes of fluid collection in the brain are- 1. Old blood clot (lacunar infarct), resulting in gliosis (scar), 2. CSF collection (cerebro spinal fluid collection, as in cysts), 3. Abscess (infection).
The appropriate diagnosis would depend on patient's symptoms, and other findings on MRI (such as location, presence of swelling or any enhancement with contrast).
