Not Able To Open Mouth Properly. What To Do?
Thanks for posting your query.
Reduced mouth opening can be due to certain conditions, such as:
- Impacted 3rd molar
- Partially erupted, infected wisdom tooth
- Oral Sub mucous Fibrosis (OSMF): condition which is caused by consumption of beetle nut on a regular basis
- Trauma from occlusion
- Injury to the jaws/teeth
Most of these conditions result in reduced mouth opening due to muscle contraction in the region.
OSMF is a precancerous condition which needs to be evaluated thoroughly.
I would strongly recommend you to visit an oral surgeon for examination and to determine the cause for your reduced mouth opening. As soon as the trigger is removed your mouth will start opening properly again.
Meanwhile you can do the following:
-Warm saline gargles 3-4 times / day
-physiotherapy
-muscle relaxants
-hot fomentation over the jaws(TM Joints)
Once the muscles are more relaxed your mouth opening should improve on its own.
Hope this answer your query. If you have any more queries, I’ll be happy to help.
