I started out on a depo shot for birth control and weighed 125 now four months later i weigh 175 and i exercise regularly and eat relatively healthy. if i go to a doctor can they help me? please help!
Depo provera can be associated with weight gain in some women, in others there is little effect. It is thought that depo may increase the appetite and this is how the weight change occurs.
Weight gain occurs because the calories put into our bodies is greater than the calories/ energy our body puts out.
To lose weight we either have to decrease the input of calories or increase the output.
It is easier to lose weight by decreasing input because a significant amount of exercise is required to produce the calorie difference needed to lose weight.
Exercise mainly plays a role in maintaining the weight loss and in general fitness and heart health.
To lose weight by calorie reduction , there are two schools of thought: (1) low fat/ low calorie diet and (2) low carbohydrate diets
Both diets require the use of water instead of sodas and fruit juice. Most sodas are at least 160 calories (the standard size drinks), if these are reduced or eliminated altogether, there would be a significant calorie reduction.
The low fat low calorie diets are based on the fact that fat contains more calorie than carbohydrate or protein per weight. For example a food containing fat would have more calories than a carbohydrate or protein food of the same weight.
It involves the use of low fat items such as low fat cheese/milk/dressings/low fat variation of any foods commonly eaten/decreasing frying. Increased portion of fruits and vegetables such that at least 5 servings are used a day.
At main meals the fruit and/or vegetable should be half of the meal.
The low carb diet is based on the premise that carbohydrates cause the body to release insulin. Insulin has different functions one of which is stopping fat from breaking down.
The more carbohydrates used, the more insulin , the less fat that is broken down.
It involves reducing the amount of carbohydrate used, to be effective it is thought that it has to be reduced to at least 50 g a day.
Protein is allowed in any amount.
In a day a person can use: 1 non carbohydrate portion of vegetables, 2 salads, 4 ounces of hard cheese like cheddar and 2 ounces of the soft cheese
No pasta/rice/bread/biscuits/breakfast cereals/potaotoes.
Detailed information on both diets is available online.
You can choose which would best suit you. You can do it on your own or with the help of a doctor specialising in weight loss. It would be best to choose this type of doctor
There are also other community groups that help with weight loss and on line programs as well.
