Ruptured Ear Drum. Will It Repair Itself?
Question: I have a ruptured ear drum, and no health insurance. Will this repair itself?

There are many people that live their lives with ruptured tympanic membranes and present no symptoms. Indications for repair shall depend on the size, the job of the patient and frequency of infections and auditory disturbances and hearing loss.
A careful consideration must be made before operating for eardrum rupture. This is because the more one operates, the more the surgery also has an impact in reducing hearing on its own too.
Antibiotics could be very helpful, especially in ear infections with pus. But drugs that are not toxic to the ear must be carefully selected by your ENT specialist.
Uncomplicated ruptured ear drums require no treatment. After surgery, some ear drums about ten percent of them could still perforate. A careful consideration between the severity of the condition, whether the patient, has symptoms or not, presence or absence of an infection, the job of the patient must be carefully considered and weighed against the cost and possible complications of surgery.
You need not bother if you are not presenting with any symptoms. However, consulting an ENT specialist for his complete evaluation and opinion are imperative.
