Shared Cigarette With Friend Who Was Bitten By Dog. Am I Exposed To Rabies Virus?
My name is nani and i recently shared a cigaratte with my friend who had bitten by dog after almost 6 hours. SoThere was an exchange of saliva i believe.
Here are my questions
1. Is mine is an exposure to rabies virus if he had bitten by a rabid dog?
2. Is six hours is enough for a person to be infectious?
3. Just for safer side, i went and took rabipur vaccine after 12 hours of this event. Will that effectively work (i still need to take 4 doses)
4. is 12 hours too late to start treatment?
5. Important question is I got to know from internet that rabipur will contain
INACTIVATED virus and it will be injected to body. DO they get activated if they go
inside body or once DEVATIVATED can ever be ACTIVATED?
5. If somebody who was not infected with rabies virus takes rabipur, what
will happen to those inactivated viruses inside body?
7. Can you get rabies form rabipur injection?
8. What will happen if i stop taking this injection if i find mine was not an exposure?
Basically i am worried about the INACTIVATED virus? Once inactivated will it be active again or it's just dead?
Pleas help me by answering these questions.
Thanks
I would like you to calm down and not be too worried about this. I will try and answer all your questions one by one..
1. No. it is only if saliva from the dog had a contact with your blood that the rabies virus can enter your blood stream
2. To assume that within 6 hours a person can be producing viruses in saliva is not correct.
For rest of your questions.. Rabipur vaccine has inactivated viruses which just stimulate body to produce antibodies against the said virus and in no circumstances the virus can become activated, for sure. Vaccine virus can not cause rabies itself in any circumstance. So you need not worry about getting infected from the vaccine when you are not infected in even first place!!
Moreover, I would not advise you to take further injections as there is no need for them and there wont be any problem if you leave the vaccination schedule here and now. One vaccine taken and forgetting about rest of the doses, only decreases the protection of your body from rabies virus, which in any case you do not need..
Just relax and do not think about this. I hope I have answered all your doubts..
Feel free to ask any more questions you have.. else you can close the discussion and rate my answer.

Few more questions if you don't mind.
1. How soon one can become infectious if he's bitten by a rabid dog?
2. So there can never be any circumstance that the virus can be activated again?
3. I heard that virus is stored inside the vial. That means it's out from the
host and once it's out of the host, it's dead and can never be alive
at any cost?
4. I'd never bitten by any animals and considering the above cigaratte sharing
scenario and getting one rabipur injection to my muscle,
can i be 200% sure that i'm not infected with this at
any point of time. Can i lead my normal life now. 100%sure?
Firstly, you are absolutely 100% normal and can lead normal life.. no doubts about it at all..
Other than that answers for your other questions:
1. One is infectious only after 24 - 48 hours of being bitten by rabid dog.
2 & 3. there can be no situation that virus can be reactivated.
4. in present scenario you can be 300% sure that you are not infected.
Just relax and trust me.. You are absolutely fine.. and have no problem whatsoever. So just keep enjoying life to the fullest and stop worrying about this..
Take care.. :-)

But my anxiety is getting BEST of me. :(
only for the last time, just Need some facts from you sir. Please never mind sir.
1. When you say virus is deactivated and cannot be active again,
when they inject the deactivated virus, how can body produce antibodies to deactivated
viruses?
2. What is the medical reason that is there behind your words "virus once deactivated,
will never be activated what so ever"
3. Have you ever heard of any case where the vaccine has given disease?
4. How can i be sure that virus is deactivated and never can be alive? I mean just like the fact
where hiv virus will automatically becomes deactiv once outside the body. So even
rabid virus also will become inactive once come out of the body? just need some facts before i move
on with my life.
5. From where rabipur viruses are taken From?
Sorry for asking too much sir but i hope you will understand my level of anxiety. :(
i actually need the facts before moving on. Kindly help for the last time.
Rabipur virus is taken from active rabies virus, treated in laboratory, to remove some structural elements from it so that becomes unifectable but retaining some elements in it, so that human body can recognise it and generate antibodies against it.. Hence antibodies are made against some essential structural elements of virus which will be there in all rabies virus whether inactivated or active..
However as inactive viruses have lost the capacity to be infective after being modified in laboratory the person receiving vaccine is safe from vaccine virus..
Hope this solves your queries.. Now please chill and relax.. Stop worrying.. You should realize that your thoughts are taking away a good life and happiness from you. You are absolutely fine :-)
Dr. Rajat Gupta
I am sure the difference must be because of the exposure difference..
Your friend was bitten and you were not.. But I still don't think there is any need for this at all..
Dr Rajat Gupta
Thanks for writing back.
1. You can stop vaccination and are totally normal and I do not see a reason why you should take further vaccination. .. As far as skin rash is concerned I would recommend you to consult a dermatologist, it seems not related to this episode. It is unlikely to be due to the vaccine.
2. You need not take any specific precautions and do anything drastic.
3. And yes if you watch the dog for 10 days and it is normal than that means it is not a rabid dog and your friend is also not infected.
4. You need not continue the vaccine.
5. So please now relax. And I am pretty sure of what I am advising you. Take care :-)

Dr. Rajat Gupta
Here in my place where i stay, this area is full of dogs and sometimes people
take precautions while walking also. Thats the reason i'm worried.
About skin rash it itches only in the evening and vanish in the morning.
I hope it's not related anything to rabies vaccine.
Last follow up sir
1. Is dog bite is the only way to transfer rabies. Human to human transfer occur in
what scenarios? I saw some posts where it says only during organ transplan
so is human saliva is also infectious to transmitt rabies?
2. Stopping the vaccination only one dose doesnt create any adverse effect on my health rite?
It doesn't even transmitt rabies?
Thanks for the advice sir. Hope i didn't bug you much. I'll surely follow up wit you
if i have any doubts. Thanks for the answer sir. God bless you and your family.
Do not worry... It is always better to clear your doubts rather than worrying about them
Human to human transfer of rabies virus has been seen after transplant surgeries and occasional cases have been reported by human bite, hence extremely rare.
And stopping of vaccine won't affect you at all in any way.
Hope this clarifies all your doubts.
Take care
Dr. Rajat Gupta
it can't be transmitted from sharing same Room, cigaratte, or if i accidently touch
saliva which is out of his mouth for some time, eating food with
that hand only, can all this be considered as
NOT AN EXPOSURE when it comes to rabies.
Are above things considered as EXPOSURE?
Extremely sorry for late reply..
You are right in understanding what is exposure and what is not..
Biting, organ transplant and rarely by kissing are the only exposure means and rest are not.
Hope this helps
Take care..

My anxiety was getting best on me and i could not control so i went and
vaccinated again schedule is (0, 3, 7, 14 and 28) i have had 0 and 3 now.
Doctor confirmed that it should be 0, 3, 7 14 and 28 and she accidently entered 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28. :(
If i dont vaccine now, i will be thinking over this and spoil my days and
anyway there are strayed dogs around my office and local health department
people are trying to vaccinate them and there are rabid dogs too.
few things to clarify.
1. Now with this vaccination course, even if i had infected through my friend
after sharing cigaratte or food or in any manner, can i be confident that
i will be immune to future rabies exposure (atleast for an year) and
to current exposure (which is not an exposure) if at all happened to me and
these vaccination will work to eliminate the rabies virus? can i be 100% sure that after completing this course i will be fine as before and i have not
caught virus with all my exposures mentioned???
2. Should i follow any food diet during these vaccinations? can i eat Non veg?
Can i have moderate alcohol? or should i stop both for a month? i am asking because, they said these viruses are extracyed from chickem embryo cells. so
eating non veg does make any difference to behaviur of virus and it's
DEACTIVATION?
3. Anyway you already confirmed that i can never ever get rabies from
vaccine itself since it will have DECATIVATED viruses right?
Sorry for bugging ou sir but i always think more than enough. Help me to get through this with medical facts.
I'm eagerly waiting for your reply :(
Sorry for late reply.
As far as medical facts are concerned that's what I have told you repeatedly. I have tried to explain you all things and relieve you of your anxiety.
1. You WILL NOT get rabies whether or not you follow any schedule, whatsoever.
2. There is no interaction of vaccine and you taking alcohol or non vegetarian food. Don't worry.
3. Lastly XXXXXXX just relax. If the anxiety is getting better of you, you may try a small dose of antianxiety pills like alprazolam briefly under the guidance of a physician. That will definitely benefit you.
Hope you are satisfied now.
Take care...
Dr Rajat Gupta
fda sued some company because of having active viruses in vaccine.
Somebody also said that there is a small chance of getting rabies from rabies vaccine.
That is actually the reason i'm worried and losing my sleep for it.
1. Can all the above mentioned things happen in reality?
2. Has it ever happened in the medical history?
This will be really my last question. I know you have answered but for the
last time i want to listen from you. Please answer last 2 questions.
No issues. Such things has had happened just as one off event in history. But to think of it that this will happen to you will be farfetched. Moreover, even for this reason you shouldn't have got vaccinated again.
Never mind, just relax and forget that you shared one cigarette!!
Take care
Dr. Rajat Gupta
Somebody got infected because of rabies vaccine?
How this happened sir? When?
Who was the manufacturer? Did they actually had
the Not Deactivated virus in vaccine? Can you
please explain bit
I am sorry; I don't know the detail of the said incident. I have heard about it. But it was just one off the record.
You need not worry.
Take care.
Dr Rajat Gupta
1. You mean it has happened only ONCE in entire rabies vaccination history?
2. How many years ago you heard about thin incident?
3. I'm not thinking about the cigaratte incident and even doctor told that
he'll not be infected in 6 hours after bite. But my bad next day we ate in same plate. Theoretically
infection is possible rite? that is what i'm concerning and confused. We ate roti
with curry being put in single plate.
4. Any idea who was the manufacturer and in which country it happened? Was it rabipur vaccine?
I'll surely consult a doctor for anxiety medicines sir. Thanks for the suggestions.
Also one question behalf of my friend.
1. My friend has already
taken two doses of rabipur one on monday and other one is on
thursday. Now if he's exposed again lets say today if he
gets another dog bite, should he restart the vaccination from zero day
again or should he continue the same. His next vaccination is tomorrow.
2. After 2 rabipur shots at zero and 3rd day, will body start to produce antibodies
and start fighting. Can any exposure during the treatment be neglected?
Sorry for replying late.
Please do not speculate. At least I cannot guide you the treatment on your speculations. What if your friend gets one more dog bite!!!! The ongoing vaccination course will tackle it. He can also get antirabies serum on the bite site...
Just ask your friend to take full course of vaccination and for your own good take anti anxiety drugs and relax. Or better go on a vacation and stop worrying about vaccine history and all.
Hope you get relaxed soon.
Regards
is it's 3rd vaccine.
He actually came in contact with dog's saliva tat fallen in to his eyes. Thats is the reason he's worried and
he's anticipating your answer now.
With respect to vaccination history, i'll surely forget remaining vaccine and
move on with my life. Finally i have made up my mind.
My friend sitting here in dark room and crying because he doesn't know
if the current vaccine ( 2 vaccine he'd already and one tomorrow ) will kill the
virus if he'd infected today or treat this as a new exposure and start vaccine again.
We live in a place where there are no specialists. So we are waiting for ur answers.
Don't worry...
Ask your friend to continue the schedule as it is. The existing schedule of antirabies vaccine will take care of this exposure as well.
I hope he had washed his eyes after the exposure. If not, there is no worry. The vaccines should take care of the virus.
So ask your friend not to worry.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
Dr Rajat Gupta
only washed it after an hour with soap and water.
Today he took one rabipur (on 7th day, 3rd vaccine ) as per the
schedule and after this i hope his antibodies will be
able to tackle and kill the virus.
I'll keep updating you the status. Thanks for the timely help sir.
Yes do tell me if you have any problem..
Wishing your friend a speedy recovery..
