Brief Answer:
Avoid potassium-rich foods as listed below
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mrs. XXXXXXX
Thanks for your query. You have not mentioned the reason for which you are taking
spironolactone. I presume that it was prescribed for
high blood pressure.
Nevertheless, your doctor has taken the right step by ordering blood potassium level test, since Spironolactone- when used for a long time- progressively increase potassium levels in the blood.
Further,
Sertraline increases potassium levels by reducing sodium levels in the blood.
Hence, pending the blood report, you should ideally STOP spironolactone (your treating doctor will prescribe a substitute); and, take a LOW-POTASSIUM DIET.
Avoid/restrict the following foods which are rich in potassium :-
* Whole-grain breads, wheat XXXXXXX granola and granola bars
* Beverages : Sports drinks, soy milk
* Snack foods/sweets : Peanut butter, nuts or seeds , chocolate
* Fruits : Apricots, avocado, bananas, coconut, kiwi, mango, oranges, orange juice, dried fruits
* Vegetables : baked or refried beans, beets, broccoli, sprouts, cabbage (raw), carrots (raw), olives, mushrooms (canned), potatoes, tomato, tomato sauce, tomato juice.
* Dairy products : Milk and milk products, buttermilk, yogurt
* Shellfish, sea foods and red meat.
* Soups : Salt-free soups.
I am sure that your treating doctor will modify the doses of current medications or, the prescription itself on seeing the test report.
Hope I have addressed your concerns to your complete satisfaction and you find my response helpful and informative. I will be happy to answer further queries, if any.
Fond regards and have a nice day,
