Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a prozac pill in the morning, then late in the afternoon to midnight I have about 5 drinks of Vodka and OJ. Sometimes early in the day I take Tylinal with Codine, not when I am drinking. My life is normal. I do not stumble, or miss appointments or mess up in any way. I have no symptems at all. Am I drinking too much. I am concerned about my liver. But they also say Tylinal with Codine can affect your liver but Dr. have been giving me those for years, so why is that ok, and Vodka is not? Thank you
Tylenol has a damaging effect on liver when taken continuously for a long time only. Similarly, codeine may also cause very little ill-effect on liver, if any, if taken in high doses only, as it is metabolized in liver. Rather it may have its damaging effect more on brain and heart. Contrary to this, recommended acceptable dose of alcohol (Including vodka) is 1drink/day in women and 2 drinks / day in men. Therefore the daily 5 drink dose of vodka is far higher then the acceptable limit dose and it is definitely injurious to your liver. Hence doctor is perhaps rightly prescribing you Tylenol and codeine in minimum amount, instead of vodka.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
