Question: Hi.
i have flaky skin on my cheeks and in between the two eye brows . i have been applying . hydrocortisone ointment 1% for over a period of 1 year. During the application period the redness or the flaky skin don't show. but if i don't apply it for 2 or 3 days it will show up again. One doctor told me not to apply hydrocortisone ointment for a long period of time since its a steroid. so i started applying efaderm cream. No matter how much I apply the redness and the flakes starts to appear on my cheeks. today there was a considerable amount of flakes. what should I do. Pls help.

Brief Answer:
There is no permanent solution of your problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us.
In my opinion you are suffering from a medical condition known as seborrhoeic dermatitis.
There is no permanent treatment of this condition, you can only prevent and reduce it's reoccurrence.
Yes! it is true that long term use of steroid is not applicable.
Some tips from my side-
- Never use too hot or too cold water
- drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily
- always use soap free product for cleansing your face( cetaphil)
- always moisturise your face after washing
- Avoid extreme weather condition
- avoid perfumed soap, hard soap and razor etc.
- Treatment include keratolytic agent, anti inflammatory drugs, anti fungal( cotrimazole)
- Efaderm cream is quite effective, you can use aloe cream, lacto calamine lotion, oil of oregano and always use sunscreen( before exposure to sun)
Hope I have answered your query if you have further questions I will be happy to help you.
Good luck.
Regards
Dr. Richa
