Suggest Alternative Medication For Chronic Sinusitis

default
Posted on Thu, 17 Nov 2016
Question: My doctor says I have chronic sinusitis, she prescribed a nasal spray antihistamine, but it is not helping that much. I still am stuffed up and get a lot of headaches. Is there anything else that might help this condition?

This has been going for about 6 weeks, I do have high blood pressure also, and I am allergic to penecillin

Brief Answer:
Nasal steroids sprays, exclude pus accumulation in sinuses, antibiotics, dr

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

It's true that anti histamines are useful in managing chronic sinusitis. I however believe that other considerations need attention. Special x rays to check sinuses. Chronic uncontrolled sinusitis with anti histamines might indicate accumulation of pus. Your ENT doctor will decide either to treat medically with anti biotic, nasal sprays for sometime generally steroids. Special examinations like nasal fibroscopy to check for nasal polyps might be useful. In case histamines are not helping, nasal steroids, anti biotic and at times surgery might be options. The decision to add an antibiotic or nasal steroids depends on your doctor,s clinical review. I strong suggest these X rays be done to be sure no pus is accumulated in the nasal sinuses.

Untreated purulent sinusitis could lead to infection of the brain/meningitis in some rare cases.

Wasing nasal cavities with over the counter nasal sprays and nasal steroids added to antihistamines could be temporal options .

I suggest you see your doctor.

Thanks and kind regards as I wish you the best of health.
