Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Klonopin

Question: I have PD and am taking klonopin for sleep(insomnia), but my tiredness and balance is really off. What might another drug be to help me sleep be? I'm extremely fatigued.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

I see that apart from klonopin you have tried Resteral and Ambien without success. So that would exclude the benzodiazepine class (klonopin and resteral) as well as Z-drugs like ambien.

Another class which is commonly used for insomnia are antihistamine drugs like diphenhydramine 50 mg taken in the evening, it is an over the counter product. There is still the risk of some sedating effect the day after though.

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone which if taken early in the evening may be beneficial in promoting sleep.

In the last couple of years there is also a new option in the market, a medication called suvorexant. It's brand name is Belsombra, is taken also once daily in the evening.
