Suggest Alternative Medication To Biaxin After Wisdom Teeth Extraction
Question: My son has been prescribed Biaxin instead of Amoxicillin to take post having his wisdom teeth extracted tomorrow due to having an allery to Ceclor. I am a nurse and remembered he actually did not have a problem with Amoxicillin. His reaction to Ceclor involved a very red flushed face when he was around 5-6 years old. I also remember Biaxin has a tough after taste. I wondered if there is another antibiotic instead of Biaxin I could ask his oral surgeon about. My son also had acute gastritis about 5 years ago after taking the 5 day Zpac. That's why I'm concerned about Biaxin. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. XXXX
Brief Answer:
Augmentin would be good choice.

Hello XXXXXXX
Welcome and thanks for your query.
I agree with you that many people have difficulty in tolerating Clarithromycin ( Biaxin). It may cause gastritis in people susceptible. If he is not allergic to Amoxicillin, Augmentin or even Amoxicillin by itself would be a suitable antibiotic.
Please get his doctor's consent before changing the antibiotic.
Best wishes,
Augmentin would be good choice.
