Suggest An Alternative Anesthesia For Shoulder Surgery
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Is there an alternative anesthesia or another option for his shoulder to be operated on in 2016?
His shoulder is bone on bone and he cannot lift his arm up but can move forward and back.
He is 76 and has been very active his entire life. He also has a pace maker.
Local anaesthesia ( brachial block ) is best for him
Detailed Answer:
Hello there, Welcome to HCM.
I have studied your case and I would suggest you to go with local anaesthesia after discussing with your anaesthetist. In local anaesthesia only shoulder and arm is anaesthetise. It is most safe anaesthesia in heart patients.
As your husband has history of complication during anaesthesia he will need a pre operative detail work up by anaesthetist along with optimisation of blood pressure, coagulation and heart check up. As he has pace makers so this surgery will be in high risk procedure and he may need ICU care post-Operatively.
Do not worry. With modern technique even general anaesthesia is also safe. General anaesthesia may be needed in case, while Brachial block is not effective.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. I wish him fast recovery from shoulder replacement surgery.
Thanks
