Question: What are the causes and cure for ''fatty liver''? How are alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty livers different? I recently got an abdominal ultrasound done because I was experiencing a lump like feeling under my right rib-cage, the report is attached herewith. It says the impression is of a fatty liver...

Please advice for complete cure and avoidance of such trouble in future...

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for sending the question.

One of the most common causes of a fatty liver is obesity. Of course we think about alcohol as a concerning factor as well. If you do not consume alcohol then I would focus on optimization of your weight.

It would be reasonable for you to visit with a liver specialist to discuss the findings of the ultrasound and to put together a routine for you regarding lifestyle modifications. An ultrasound can be checked again in 6-12 months to see if there has been any improvement. Also I'm sure your doctors have checked your liver function via blood testing results as well.

Thanks again for sending the question. Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance in the future.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
