Question: I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia with Shatzki's ring. I was treated with Prevacid, not very efficient. Now I take Esomeprazole 40mg bid - somewhat efficient. Are there natural things, like certain food I can eat rather than piils to keep it under control

Brief Answer:
Its hard to completely eliminate your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your symptoms are caused by mechanical problem with esophagus, not due to excessive production of the acid.
So no matter what you do, still stomach acid (there must be some stomach acid to digest foods) will appear in your esophagus. You may lower its amount, make foods more dense, but you can not expect complete elimination of the symptoms with this method.
For sure you should avoid coffee, caffeinated drinks, soft drinks, orange juices, chocolate, sweets, alcohol. Try to not drink during meals. You may walk after every meal for 15 minutes (do not sit or lie down). Do not eat 2 hours before sleeping. Avoid lifting heavy objects. If you are obese person, try to loose weight. If you smoke, do not smoke.

The best solution for you, is a laparoscopic surgery called fundoplication. If mentioned methods will fail, you may consult a surgeon.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

I drink 1 cup of sometimes 2 of decaffeinated coffee in the morning. Does 2oz of 70% dark chocolate apply? Also I love to have 2 oz of Dry Sac XXXXXXX before supper 2 or 3 times a week. Should I quit everything altogether? Thank you for your prompt attention

Brief Answer:
Try to limit all of them

Detailed Answer:
Unfortunately sugar is what greatly stimulates stomach acid production. That is how chocolate works. So it wouls be good to limit it. Coffee is also something very let say stressfull for the stomach. Even decaffeinated. And Dry Sac cherry especially in the evening is almost a bomb for the stomach acid secretion.
So it seems that you should quit all mentioned things and see if it helps.
