Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
Attempting to self-detox from alcohol is extremely dangerous and potentially fatal. I have seen people die trying to do this. Withdrawal can result in tremor, ataxia, spikes in blood pressure with risk of brain hemorrhage, increased heart rate, seizures, coma, and death. Any detox should only be undertaken under the direct supervision of a physician in a monitored environment where your vital signs can be closely watched.
Typically, high-dose IV valium is used based on a CIWA protocol. Alternatively, Ativan 2mg can be used. Ativan is typically given in the following doses: 2mg every 15 minutes for a systolic blood pressure >150, diastolic blood pressure >100, heart rate >100, tremor, or sweating. This is the only way to avoid withdrawal and the possibly fatal complications.
